The original 'Mrs. America Pageant' began in 1938 and lasted for three decades before discontinuing in 1968. It was designed to select the ideal American homemaker. In 1977, David Z. Marmel formed a new pageant organization and established beauty as a key element in the competition. Mrs. America contestants are strongly urged to voice their opinions on marriage and important issues of the day. IMITATED but NEVER DUPLICATED, Mrs. America remains the FIRST, and still the foremost competition for married women!
This national competition is devoted to proving that America's 60 million married women are, beyond a doubt, extraordinarily beautiful, poised, articulate and versatile. They truly are one of our country's Greatest Natural Resources. Each of the 51 Mrs. America candidates achieves the right to participate in the Mrs. America Pageant by winning her state or district competition. These state and district events are under the direction of Mrs. America State Directors, a network of respected and talented community and business leaders reflecting one of the largest systems of its genre in the world. Their efforts over the past quarter of a century continues as a year-long effort to discover the most accomplished married women qualified to compete for the esteemed title. The winner of the coveted Mrs. America crown will travel across the country making personal appearances during her year's reign. Mrs. America will also represent our country in the Mrs. World Pageant.
The Mrs. America Pageant, with the Mrs. World Pageant, IS the largest 'Mrs.' beauty pageant system of its kind in the world. With a record number of applicants seeking to participate in the Mrs. America Pageant, it is now the largest 'Mrs.' pageant program in the United States. Mrs. America is the ONLY nationally televised 'Mrs.' pageant and is recognized as the NUMBER ONE pageant for married women. Over the years, Mrs. America has been nationally televised and produced from such extraordinary locations as Honolulu, Hawaii, Las Vegas, San Diego, Reno, Ft. Worth, and Santa Monica. In 1990, Mrs. America was a spectacular two-hour internationally televised special broadcast around the world. It was also the first entertainment special to be produced in Moscow, USSR .
Mrs. America was held in September of 2005 at the prestigious Riviera Resort in Palm Springs, California. The TV Special is the ONLY pageant of ANY kind that is annually televised AN IMPRESSIVE TEN TIMES nationwide on WE:Women's Entertainment Network. The new Mrs. America also represented the United States along with representatives from 38 other countries at Mrs. World in St. Petersburg, Russia. The telecast was seen around the world in 60 countries reaching hundreds of millions of viewers. Together, these two systems comprise the largest genre in the world.
